July will mark the Tenth Anniversary of South x Southeast

and we’re ready to Celebrate!

When I started SxSE magazine in 2011 I didn’t dare think about where I’d be ten years. But, with your help, I’m here!

And so there will be a party! And there will be cake!

And we’re going back to the theme of the first issue, and the first Call for Entries – Southern Landscapes.

Dewees Island, SC ©Nancy McCrary

Nancy McCrary (bio below) is the curator and this is what I want to see. Your images of the American South – urban or rural, whimsical or dead serious, with people, plants, dogs, cats, wild animals, lush foliage, the morning dew and evening fog, that light you only get in the South, heat and humidity, from the islands to the mountains to hanging on the walls of the gallery and online. I want to see it. And, if you’d like, I want you to tell us about it, too.

And, as a Birthday Gift to you, we’re asking for FIVE of your images for the usual fee of $30!
I will be choosing 8 photographers for features in the June/July issue of SxSE from those curated into this show.

BIO:

In July of 2011 Nancy McCrary used her extensive background in fine art photography and niche magazines to launch South x Southeast photomagazine. During the previous 8 years she had served as co-director of the photography festival SlowExposures. Through this experience she recognized the need for a platform for emerging and established fine art photographers from, and working in, the American South. The geographical boundaries of SxSE, as well as the dedicated subscriber base, has grown each and every year. Leading to SxSEmagazine showcasing the work of over 1000 photographers, galleries, museums, and book publishers over the last 10 years – exposure that has produced profitable collaborations. With return advertisers from year one such as the High Museum of Art Atlanta, The Frist Art Museum Nashville, University of Mississippi Press, Houston Center for Photography and many more SxSEmagazine has offered advertisers a niche location for a dedicated subscriber base of photography enthusiasts, collectors, publishers, educators, as well as photographers themselves.

In 2016 South x Southeast Workshops was added to the brand. After highlighting many established and master photographers in the magazine a need to give our photographers an opportunity to interact with  these industry experts was recognized. During the last five years, notable photographers, photography editors, and gallerists such as Elizabeth Avedon, Peter Essick, Molly Roberts, Aline Smithson, Sylvia Plachy, Debbie Fleming Caffery, and many more have taught in studio and on remote location for South x Southeast.

In 2017 South x Southeast continued to expand the brand with the restoration of an old red brick building in the historic town of Molena, Georgia. The South x Southeast fine art photography gallery opened in April of that year. With this we began issuing Call for Entries for emerging photographers. The same notable photography experts who taught our workshops curated exhibitions from these Calls for the bricks-and-mortar gallery in Molena as well as for the online gallery, sxsegallery.com.

And in 2018 Ms. McCrary moved the gallery to the restored barn built by her grandfather in 1930 on the fourth generation farm where she resides. South x Southeast Gallery continues to hang exhibitions every 8 weeks, as well as sell the work of these photographers online through www.sxsegallery.com.

And last, but certainly not least, SxSE Shop is where to go to purchase prints, books, note cards and such. Or, where to find our latest Call for Entry and submit to be included in an exhibition.
