Joe Massey began collecting photography in 1972 with an emphasis on black and white post-1950 imagery. The work of Harry Callahan was an early influence.
An above average amateur photographer, he became involved in the arts of Atlanta around the same time, beginning with Nexus Gallery which was founded by photographers in 1973. Nexus went on to become Atlanta Contemporary Art Center which Dr. Massey continues to support.
Becoming a donor through an uncle’s charitable trust allowed this self-described “museum nerd” to strong leadership roles at MOCA GA, The Michael C. Carlos Museum of Emory University, and High Museum of Art Atlanta. He is a contributor and donor to each museum.
Dr. Massey is currently on the advisory board of Atlanta Center of Photography, and is a Supporting Member of Atlanta Photography Group.
